Post 10: Speak Again, Lord. Your Servant Wasn't Listening.

Published on October 8, 2026 at 12:49 PM

This morning, as I sat in my swivel rocker by the French doors that look over the back garden, I was meditating on the passage I had just read in Luke 24. Jesus had just joined two of the disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. They who had walked with Him for three years were kept from recognizing Him. And I thought, How many times has He been walking with me, and I didn't recognize Him, speaking to me, and I didn't recognize His voice?

Then I looked down at my left leg, where there were three wounds in different stages of healing from three falls that have happened over the last three months. Hmm. Could it be that God has been speaking to me about my increasing balance problem? That He has been reminding me of my daughter's frequent encouragement to use the lovely green cane she bought for me after the fall that broke my arm last year?

I looked out and up considered the changing leaves—I love to watch the passing of seasons from the comfort of my chair—and I noticed that the leaves I saw were also at different stages of dying. The grass was covered in a carpet of the golden ones. Yet many were still hanging on tightly on the same twig as the green ones. That's me. Hanging on. Then Jesus whispered, Why are you not listening to Michèle and the scars on your leg? Could it be your pride? Fear that people will no longer think you are younger than your age  because a cane signifies decrepitude? Hmm.

So, friends, if you see an elderly woman walking around with a shiny green cane, you can assume that the woman has finally recognized the voice of God (and her daughter's too).

My prayer: God, forgive my painful pride and help me to be more sensitive to the voice of your Spirit and give me an obedient heart.

"Even though my outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day."
II Cor. 4:16

Don't worry about your pride my dear friend. I was encouraging Lee S. to use his walker and he said "NO"!! so you know me-I don't let go. I asked him Why? And he whispered that it was his pride. I told him that if he fell in the middle of the church hallway that his pride would be hurt a lot worse. But=-he still won't use his walker!! Use your cane my friend, but still be careful. Don's balance isn't good and the physio at UH told him he was not to use a cane!! God Bless. Missed giving you a hug this morning.

I have been using a cane for two years but only need it outside. It has real oetks—when people see one using a cane, they always offer to help with parcels, fetching-whatever. Consider your cane to be an asset! Remember—the grand dames of British society use them as a sign of their status in high society. Enjoy! 😊

You grabbed me with the title; I laughed ( thinking of myself) and read your message immediately.
Pride for most of us is a problem, especially as we age. Please say it again, Lord.
